Will a 1066mhz processor work in an older 800mhz FSB laptop?

Hey, I'm looking to put a T9800 (6mb 45nm penryn 1066mhz 3ghz Core2duo) into my Gateway e295C laptop. It currently has a T7700 (4mb 65nm conroe 800mhz 2.4ghz Core2duo) which runs on the 800mhz bus. The memory is 667 or 800mhz PC5300/6400 DDR2.

I'm contemplating the cpu upgrade, is there a chance of incompatibility? Perhaps the bios wont recognize the new 45nm wolfdale/penryn cpus? AFAIK the processor options at the time the laptop was new were all 65nm conroes / 65nm mobile quads.

Thx for the help! :)

Yeah. There's quite a few chances for incompatibility. One is the BIOS. Two, it would run at 800MHz FSB, thus operating at a slower clock IF it booted at all. And there's probably a few more. What chipset is in that Gateway?

Gateway Viper SR Intel 965M AGTL+ 800mhz bus 200mhz real
DDR2 333mhz 667mhz effective
intel crestline PM 965 Santa Rosa Platform
Says supported FSB is 533/667/800 (and I don't believe gateway's proprietary bios is FSB overclocking friendly)

BTW, thanks for the quick reply. I have a feeling it will either not boot, or boot at 200mhz FSB like you said.

Yeah. The T7700 series Core2's on the 965 chipset probably are not compatible with the newer T9800 Core2's. There's no BIOS to support it, and probably not compatibile. There is no OC. You can try it, but I'd suggest saving your money to buy a new laptop instead.

Thanks for your reply. I've decided to keep the cpu. The two upgrades i've settled on are hdd and ram.

2x1GB PC5300 ddr2 667mhz cas6 --> 2x2GB 4GB PC5300 g.skill CAS 4
80gb 7200rpm Hitachi HDD ---> Wester digital 320gb 7200BEKT Caviar black
Win xp pro 32bit ---> Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit

I'll just keep the cpu as is, don't want to risk it.
