Will 9600GT + AMD 4000+ run blu-ray well?

Considering popping an XFX 9600GT video card and an AMD 4000+ San Diego cpu into a Foxconn 939 nForce 6150 series motherboard. nybody know if this do blu-ray movies well? I'm doing this for my dad. He would end up with the following:

• XFX 9600GT (OC'd)
  AMD 4000+ San Diaego CPU
  2GB DDR400
  Foxconn 6150 nForce 430 MCP motherboard
  LG GGC-H20L Blu-ray / HD DVD player

It's either this or a new AMD 780G series motherboard and a new CPU. Opinions would be appreciated. Of course I do know there are new nVidia based boards coming, and that the price for this particular card isn't so great right now. Newegg had an eVGA 9600GT for $99 AR recently, but that's the past.

Thanks. I just realized for sound to go to the HDMI cable the nVidia cards needs a connector that this motherboard doesn't have. So I reckon it'll be ATI. Maybe 3850 series is what I'm thinking. The ATI cards have sound onboard.

A HD 3450 should work fine for that even. That is pretty much what it was designed to do.

Hmmm, now my dad's saying if I can set it up so the grand kids can play PC games (like Lego Star Wars or Indiana Jones) on his 1080P TV, he'd be real happy. Should I assume this will not happen with any of the ATI cards and this CPU? He thinks I should consider the 3400, or 3600 series, or even the 3800 series. But I wonder if any will do games as well as movies on a 1080P TV.

3850 or 3870 for ATi if you want 1080P gaming, and even that's pushing it. 9600GT and 8800GT minimum for Nvidia. Again those are pushing it as 1920x1080 is not easy to do.

It depends. I don't think you will have a problem with that Processor for playing those games (I am assuming it is the single core 2.6GHz version), but you may want to look at a HD 3850 or 3870 for those resolutions, and make sure you get the 512MB version for that resolution. You can pick up a HD 3870 for real cheap at Best Buy right now (only $129.99)

It depends. You might need a Blu Ray software player than can use the acceleration features of your video card too. The simplest way is probably using PowerDVD Ultra or its WinDVD counterpart (not all version allow for blue ray playback). I know there are ways to use Media Player classic and installing certain codecs and filters, but this is more complicated than just using PowerDVD or WinDVD.

Thanks. I already have one of the LG blu-ray players. It came with PowerDVD 7.3, or at least I was able to upgrade it to 7.3. It's not great, but it does the job for now. Of course I'm using mine with a C2D 6600 and a 3870 X2. The upgrade to WinDVD 9 Ultra or Power DVD 8 Ultra is around $100, which is a joke. Costco had it for $70 recently, I should have jumped. It's $85 now, just checked.

You should hold onto that PowerDVD, I think in more recent versions, they removed the ability to play HD DVD, if that's important to you.

I do have many HD DVD's, so thanks for the tip!
