Can 4 pin case fan w/ adapter plug into 3 pin header w/o burning it out?

Building another pc. I want to buy an Antec SX830 but I also want a quiet computer when in standby mode. RPM monitoring is a plus, but not the issue. I currently have an SX1030B but it's too loud in standby. If this works I'm good to go. Also, will it burn out the 3-pin header?

Somewhere in the mobo manual or on the maker's website they should list the max current for the fan headers on the board. If the fan in question is rated for less current than the board, you should be OK.

An automotive type 12v relay can also be used to control fans with the board powering the low current coil only.

Or start with low noise fans in the first place, sx-antecs don't need much in the way of fan power.
