will 3-pin connectors work with high-performance fans?

I want a high-performance fan like a delta or tornado on my heatsink but they come stock with only 4-pin connectors. Can I switch out those for a small 3-pin connector to attach to my fan controller? Would it get enough power from it? This is the controller I have:

Depends on the current rating of the fan controller vs the current draw of the fan. You need to know the answer beforehand, otherwise you'll let the magic smoke out....

according to enermax's site (maxpoint.com):
Max Amperage/Voltage for each VR Knob (0.8A) / (10W/12V)

so, if your fan is more than .8A, or 10 W, you cant use that fan on it.

on my vantec one, it's 18W, or 1.5 A for the fan.
