Will 128mb make a huge difference in Win2K on my old PII-266?

Before I got my current setup (two weeks ago), my primary computer was a PII-266 w/ 64mb ram (simms) and it ran win2k. I just ordered 64mb in simms for it, and I'm gonna reformat and do a clean install. How much of a performance gain will I be looking at w/ the memory upgrade?

Oh yeah, on any PC no matter the CPU, 128MB is a necesity, and 256MB is prefered, but I don't know if you could find SIMM's of that size, and not the mention the cost of them.

?😕
1) what is a PII doing with SIMMs (desktop?) and more to the point why are you wasting such money on a 266? do you know what DIMMs cost?
2) why are you reformatting after a simple addition of memory?
3) you telling me you didn't notice that *suspicious* grinding of the swapfile with 64Mb? well if you didn't, I've a feeling you wouldn't notice anything...

I'm ?😕 too! Yes, I was thinking about just getting a new older slot 1 mobo w/ dimms, so I can have more ram and a little bit faster CPU. How much would the mobo cost? the 64mb simms cost me $25. I'm reformatting because I have Win2K installed on a very slow hard drive (it's around 4000rpms), and I want to move it to a 7200rpm drive that I have laying around. 🙂

not sure you have the cash right now, but i built myself a computer for 500 bucks(includes part shipping) you just have to carry over a few parts(soundcard, vidcard, moniter was all)

that was like 5 months ago, prices have gone way down.

i figure if i was going to upgrade today i would go with this:

mobo: shuttle ak71 - $102, had DDR mem support
CPU: 1.2ghz tbird athlon AXIA stepping - $115 shipped
Ram: 256 PC2100 DDR - 55 shipped from crucial
Fan: something good, ask in correct forum - $20
Case: Enlight 7237 - 40 shipped w/ 300watt psp

102+115+55+20+40 = 332

so for 350 you can get a top of the line computer. just something to think about, just upgrade the vidcard later, soundcard...who cares 🙂
