If the only thing an MMO can offer is raiding, then its doomed to failure. And probably very fast. I did a few raids in EQ2, but never really liked it. Ended up avoiding them altogether and joining smaller groups for Heritage Quests and the like.

I've no statistics for it, but I'd be willing to wager that the majority of MMO players don't care much for raiding in massive groups.

I would say you're right if it's the only thing a game can offer, however, what's really tricky is when a game offers plenty besides raiding, but casual players who don't want or can't put in the time to achieve raiding feel left out because they can't dominate raid encounters solo, and whine because they can't run around in powerful uber gear with the best weapons, resulting in no raiding for those who want it, leaving everyone nothing to do but kill easy mobs and try on cosmetic gear for their character (hyperbole but not by much).

I suspect EQN will show major complications from this mindset and the decisions of developers to cater to it.

EQN/Landmark is going to crash and burn from its Pay to Win model.

I don't disagree, but I've always thought pay2win was more catastrophic in a pvp game, like Planetside 2. Now someone will always argue that you can unlock everything for free in PS2 and you can, but people who subscribe get resource boosts that allow them to pull tanks, jets, and special infantry gear (C4 etc) MUCH faster - so, it's pay2win.

But PvE MMORPGs, I believe it will certainly water the game down, I mean, why should you go out and kill the creatures to do something if you can just buy it? But so many games are going this route nowadays...

I guess it comes down to just how much you can buy. If all you can buy are 50% experience boosts, perhaps that won't be so bad. But if you can buy experience boosts, all the weapons, armor, and everything, yeah....where's the prestige in doing the work when the guy next to you just bought it?
