It's definitely a tragedy-we generally don't get that kind of fire in the east (except perhaps the NJ pine barrens, which haven't had a major fire for decades and accordingly to some experts, are overdue). Our woods are generally much denser than western forests with a lot more leaves and other ground litter-but almost always its a lot wetter here.

A lot of the East Coast has been having a very substantial drought recently, especially this year. Over half my state (CT) is presently classified as a very severe drought region.

This fire has nothing to do with Trump, or any sort of biblical retribution. But climate change brought on by man made global warming is a whole different issue. The longer we and our government stick our heads in the sand and play their "I'm no scientist but..." games the problems will get worse and the solutions far more expensive and intrusive. Unfortunately it looks like we have at least four more years of backward regression ahead of us and our children's future. While dancing around all sides of this issue while campaigning, Trump now seems to be firmly in the denial camp (based on his appointments).

welcome to global warming. Enjoy.

Just found out the other day that a senior couple that were killed in that fire were parents of one of my wife's long time friends that lived in Woodstock, Ontario. What an awful way to go.

If its any consolation smoke inhalation is one of the better ways to go.

The western states have been dealing with this stuff forever. And its almost better that way. We dont have as much organic fuel ready to blow up. If this change is permanent it may make sense to do controlled burns of your forests.

Yeah we didn't hear if it was smoke or something else. They were trying to flee the Smoky Mountains but didn't make it all the way out. They were found close to the vacation home they were staying at. Hopefully it was something quick.
