I can't believe things are burning in the Smokies! Ironic yes, but I remember that place as always damp and so green to hear about this really surprises me. They had to evac Gatlingburg. Hope any ATers in the area affected are safe, werepossum and others sound off?

Winds as high as 74mph:( I've never done any forest fire fighting, but I had to control a burning field once when the wind picked and then changed direction. That was work. I can't imagine what it would be like having to contain blazes in thick cover like what they have in the Smokey range.

Terrible tragedy around here. I am about an hour outside of Gatlinburg, we're going to Pigeon Forge today. I've been up there three times in the last two months hiking and whatnot. Had our honeymoon up there, almost proposed to my wife on top of the ski lift, now its gone. Cades Cove is on fire, and Chimney Tops (my fav hike) was actually looking like a chimney, totally on fire a few days ago. Thankfully we just got a ton of rain, for the first time in months. Hopefully it helps.

The speed at which the wind was made things worse. We've had a smokey smell in the air for two weeks now, a haze and bad air quality warnings.

Maybe I should've skipped my own thread-post, and put my stuff here.

Or merge whatever. I've been in an ugly mood. Watched "The Revenant" over and over. Then picked up a copy of Turner's "Gettysburg" for $5.

Tornadoes in Ala-bam-bam

Dreaming up a dramatic script about the following summer. Setting: July, 2017 -- Death Valley, CA. 9 AM. Temperature -- 120F in the shade. A broken down old station-wagon rust-bucket with a Tennessee plate -- occupied by a man in a tee-shirt with many holes, his wife and several dirty children in the back seat . . . .

Not sure about posting. But things could heat up!

"When they go low, we go high." Gotta think about that Michelle. Gotta think about that.

Not surprising people like you are enjoying the destruction and deaths of people who by majority voted for Trump.

More accepting from the liberal left. Being hypocritical once again. Good job, shows what type of person you really are. You really went here there, high and to the left.

Also funny how you make stereotypes about poor white people. If roles were reversed and some people made about poor black people, there would be racism cries. Racism is far more accepting around here if it goes a certain way. More liberal hypocrisy.

OR, that could just be a fringe fucktard, like the people extolling 'gods will' on people suffering from aids, or 9/11 was caused by god being mad about gay marriage, you know, incredibly stupid shit like that.
My heart goes out to those in Gatlinburg and NC. Gatlinburg looks like Aleppo currently, :(

I'm not defending Tobias there, but I find it pretty amusing you Trump chumps are so enraged by that kind of invective. You support that kind of shit running for the office of president, but a nobody says something like that and look at the wailing. Safe zone time?

Talk about the pot calling the kettle black, and in this case, you went and brought race into it for good measure.

Well the Smokies got their name from the morning fog that is prevalent in the area. But at least they are getting a lot of rain today... so that should help.

This is a very profitable time of year for that area. People come to see the leaves changing colors and all of the Christmas stuff.

Congratulations, you found an asshole on the internet. You hate being categorized by sweeping brushes, yet you don't seem to mind grabbing your own when its convenient.

This wildfire is a tragedy for anyone who has been forced out of their home and I wish them the best in these trying times. Hopefully, they'll get the assistance they need to rebuild their lives.

Hate poisons the community well from which we all drink. The poisoning began when conservatives turned on liberals accusing them of being treasonous communists. And I'm sure those fires are only because god is going after a lot of gay people who live there.

Why were they even driving in it?

Dunno. Maybe there are only 1-2 roads out of the area they live in, and the fire spread too quickly for them to get out before things got really bad. Or maybe they were careless.

Based on the audio from the vid, it sounds more like the former than the latter. Most people probably wouldn't choose to put themselves in that situation.

This sucks. I'm hoping the rain we've had over the last few days takes care of it.

Probably and the only logical choice other than to stay and die in the heat and smoke was to try to get out.

I poured rain till about 3, very heavy and steady. We had a good day in Pigeon Forge, probably spent too much but oh well. Fires seem out now according to local reports.

Like usual, you and your kind have no clue. How am I a "Trump chump"? How do I support him running for president? I haven't. You cannot show me one single time I have ever supported him. In fact, I said he could possibly be the worst president ever. Just because someone doesn't like Hillary, doesn't automatically mean they like or support Trump.

I don't need a safe zone, just showing the hypocrisy of the left. The OP and that guy I posted a picture of. Happy people lost everything and died. Because most in the area voted for Trump. Liberals like to think of themselves as accepting, except when it doesn't jive with their beliefs.

And what I said was true about race. There is certainly a double standard. Around here as well. Posters can call people from the south hillbillies, making fun of the accent and how dumb they are. Say something like hood rat speaking ebonics, etc and they'll get reprimanded. It's happened before, but not the other way. That's a fact.

Well let's hope the sky diving place is ok. There's some BBQ joints down there I keep thinking of too. The mention of increasing rain is awesome news, let's hope it keeps up.

If any of that is true then I admit error Ackmed, my apologies for not paying attention to what seemed to be another vomit from a crass troll sensitive to criticism about Trump. I don't think you help your cause by performing what you decry, if your comments about Hillary are any indication. I admit that your posts aren't among those I keep tabs on really. Regardless, no you're right. You don't need a safe zone. Maybe just a mirror.

I was going to point out how hillbillies are mostly if not all white, then move on to how urban vocabulary of the black community has substantially affected modern day English, in addition to being duplicated in other cultures out of popularity, not ridicule.

But then I was like, nah.

I just don't care. Please take your ax to grind to another thread though. Thanks.

But the stills man, all of those stills.....

Kidding aside, I have some good friends in Tennessee and I'm glad to find out they're all safe and in good health.

Saw this a couple of days ago. Terrifying. They are lucky to have made it out alive. Just would have taken one fallen, flaming tree and they could have been trapped.

Damn! I can't even..holy shit!

Are you kidding me? The amount of heat coming through the door must have been insane, those guys have some serious balls. Imagine if the wheels popped from the heat, or yeah a tree dropped in front of them? Game over. Bad way to go too.

That's the craziest thing I've seen in awhile.

It's not the "hypocrisy of the left," it's some random douchebag on the internet. Get over yourself.

It's definitely a tragedy-we generally don't get that kind of fire in the east (except perhaps the NJ pine barrens, which haven't had a major fire for decades and accordingly to some experts, are overdue). Our woods are generally much denser than western forests with a lot more leaves and other ground litter-but almost always its a lot wetter here.

A lot of the East Coast has been having a very substantial drought recently, especially this year. Over half my state (CT) is presently classified as a very severe drought region.

This fire has nothing to do with Trump, or any sort of biblical retribution. But climate change brought on by man made global warming is a whole different issue. The longer we and our government stick our heads in the sand and play their "I'm no scientist but..." games the problems will get worse and the solutions far more expensive and intrusive. Unfortunately it looks like we have at least four more years of backward regression ahead of us and our children's future. While dancing around all sides of this issue while campaigning, Trump now seems to be firmly in the denial camp (based on his appointments).

Two juveniles reportedly responsible for starting fire. Holy shit.
wo juveniles face charges of aggravated arson in connection with a deadly Tennessee wildfire that began in late November and spread to Gatlinburg, Tennessee, according to Mark Gwyn, director of the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.

Additional charges are being considered, 4th District Attorney General James Dunn said, including the possibility of seeking a transfer to adult criminal court.
He said the youths were from Tennessee, but not from Sevier County, where the fires started. Neither their ages nor genders were released.
Fourteen people lost their lives in the fires and a further 134 were injured, according to officials.
