Now who would be crazy enough to get anywhere near wild gerbils?
They would tear you to pieces!

The Serengeti?
The species of gerbils most people are familiar with inhabit the arid plains and hills of China, Mongolia specifically, hence the name Mongolian Gerbil. There are at least several other lesser known species of gerbils which inhabit North Africa, Russia, and India, but they aren't nearly as popular as the Mongolian gerbils (at least based on pet shop offerings), though they aren't difficult to find, either.

Hamsters as someone mentioned are native to the Middle East, namely Syria. There are wild populations of hamsters in China, Russia, and Europe. But it is believed that all known variations of the hamster were brought to those areas from Syria and were then selectively or cross-bred for various features to get the dwarf, fancy, or long-haired variants.

hamsters are rodents, so i would venture a guess that you would find them in places in the wild where wild rats and mice live.
We have wild mice around here, but definately no wild gerbils and hamsters. 😛
