It's getting so you have to put a catchy title up there to get noticed any more...:D

I'm going to put together a little cpu fridge. Not a big one, just a little peltier unit in between my Alpha hsf and my P3 700e
Here's what I have got

72 watt peltier unit
1/4 inch thick copper cold plate
closed cell sticky back foam
alpha hsf

I am thinking I will arrange it like this:
hot side of peltier goes toward the copper face of the alpha
cold side of the peltier goes toward the 1/4" copper cold plate
arctic silver on all mating surfaces
closed cell foam surrounds the peltier so that no heat reflects back toward the cpu
other side of copper cold plate mates with cpu core

I built something like this, using much heavier 1/2 inch thick hot and cold plates for cooling my cel300a - in fact this is the same peltier unit I salvaged from that system.
Anything wrong with this plan? MikeW - are you out there? If so what do you think?
Anybody else? Especially anybody doing something like this now, thanks.

Note, I am not using any 'copper shims' or anything like that.

sounds good, but you will need some spacers for that coldplate so it does not rock on the core causing it to crack

that's also a good idea, you should be able to go pretty far with that pelt.

Well I busted off the ear on one side of the socket while trying to attach the alpha.
I was so very pissed off I just left it for a few hours.
Now I am back trying to figure out how to fix it. :(

Ear on side of socket? Are you talking about the clip that attaches the processor to the motherboard? Ermm

Hey,

I'm not very knowledgeable on peltiers, but the advice you've gotten so far is very solid, adn your plan is pretty solid(i personally haven't used a peltier in a year or so).

As far as the broken socket "lug", millisec.com sells a repair kit for that.

Thanks MikeW. I will go check them out. I have it wired together with 'tiewire' right now.
Oh, the peltier has lowered my cpu temp by about 20C ;)
