WiinXP OEM

Key and activation is needed. The exception is if you purchased say a Dell with XP installed and later on formatted and reinstalled. The Dell OEM flavor will make you enter in your key but there will be no activation as long as the system it is installed on has a Dell BIOS. Once you try to install that Dell OEM CD on another machine, you will have to go through the activation process. Same goes for Gateway, Compaq, etc.

What if I got the Dell upgrade to XP and tried to install on my non-Dell machine? Bought my inlaws a machine that is eligible to get an XP upgrade for $20, can I use that upgrade on my other machine by registering it?

I've heard it wont let me use it on another machine so I haven't pursued it.
