Wii U games worth getting?

So I had to break down and get a Wii U (so my nephew could play Mario Kart 8). I also picked up Splatoons and the console was the Super Mario World bundle.

I am possibly considering DK: Tropical Breeze and Smash Bros.

Anything else actually worth getting (aside from virtual console games which I probably own the original version of already on the original system that it was released on)?

Pikmin 3 is a favorite in our house. A little tougher to find.
If Dynasty Warriors gameplay suits you, Hyrule Warriors is very good.
Bayonetta 2 also gets you the first game.
Mario Party 10 if you've got the remotes for it. Only good with groups, obviously.

Did your bundle include Super Mario 3D world? I'm not familiar with the bundles, and the Mario naming throws me sometimes. Mine came with New Super Mario Bros. U with the extra Luigi levels. Still good, but it's not Super Mario 3D World.

There's not a lot, but the good stuff is very good.

Super Mario 3D World and New Super Mario Bros U were both quite good, though not as good as Super Mario Galaxy, IMO.

Rayman Legends was very good.

Bayonetta 2 got good reviews, but I never played it.

Pikmin 3 was quite good, though it's a very niche game. Controls are a little wonky, but the gameplay is forgiving enough to make up for the inaccurate controls.

Hyrule Warriors is fun if you have someone to play with in co-op. It's kind of repetitive and boring solo.

Rayman Legends is a must if you don't already have it for the other systems. Best Platformer in a long time. Much better than any mario game I have played in recent memory.

Pikimin 3 is a fun game too.

It's going to be almost solely dictated by what you want to play on the console. For example, I bought my Wii U as a local multiplayer machine, so games like Splatoon (which is basically useless on a local multiplayer level) and Bayonetta 2 (which is focused primarily on solo play). Still, there are several games to mention:

Super Mario Maker: Sadly, it's single-player only. This has me uncertain if I'll get it, because I got my Wii U to play with others. Still, it's a powerful level creation game with online sharing of courses, meaning an endless supply of levels.

Yoshi's Woolly World: Like Tropical Freeze, it's going to be limited to two-player co-op. However, it's a great-looking game and is supposed to be a reasonably tough game to 100%. Also, it has amiibo support (only for visual changes to Yoshi), if they interest you.

Super Smash Bros.: Get it, I don't think I have to explain myself. It's great for local multiplayer, it's got some online play, it's just a great game. Plus, they're given it decent DLC and support.

Mario Party 10: Kill it with fire and run away screaming. They've neutered this franchise, and I'm extremely disappointed in it. I could go into great detail about everything they've ruined, but it'd be a long rant. Just go read online, and you'll see that there's a reason it's the rare Nintendo-made title with weak review scores.

Mario Tennis Ultra Smash: It's coming out, and if you like Mario Tennis games of the past, you should be good for this one as well.

New Super Mario Bros. U: I'll just include Super Luigi U here as well. If you like traditional Mario platformers and want a couple to play alone or with others, you've got it. The only complaint is that playing in local co-op with the tablet means you're a support person (building extra platforms for people). It makes the game WAY too easy to beat, but without it, you'll get a typical experience.

Bayonetta 2: As was said, reviewed well, but I haven't played it. I would if my Wii U were at my house, but it's not, and I've got a lot of Xbox One games to play in the near-future.

Zelda Wind Waker HD: I didn't care for it, but if you missed the first game, it's got a visually improved release that slightly uses the tablet (for item management, I guess).

Wonderful 101: Another well-reviewed game I didn't play, but it seemed like something that should be mentioned.

Xenoblade Chronicles X: It's not out yet, and I haven't played the first, but it's supposed to have online co-op. I'd give it a try, if I had folks to play it with online.

Hyrule Warriors: Decent scores, but I'm not a Zelda person. If you are, and you're into hack-and-slash stuff, you should be pleased.

Kirby and the Rainbow Curse: Respectable platformer. If you like Kirby, you'll enjoy it. It, unlike YWW and DKC:TF, supports 4-player co-op, if I remember correctly.

I will check out Wonderful 101, Rayman, and Kirby and the Rainbow Curse. I already own the original Wind Waker, so unless I can get it pretty cheap (i.e. $19 or less), I won't bother. I remember hearing some good things about Wonderful 101, but I forgot about it until you mentioned the game.

Mario Kart is the only decent thing available.
All the other titles are remakes or just lame.

Glad we got that sorted. Buy one game, ignore all others, and don't bother acknowledging that quite a few tracks in MK8 are actually carried over from previous games in the franchise.

I have one. It gets as much use as I expected, which is not a great deal. The PS4 is much better for most people, but if you like the Nintendo caliber of games it's not bad as long as you get one of the good deals on it. If I knew nothing about a person's preferences I would obviously recommend a PS4. More power, more games, etc.

To be honest, I was basically going to skip this generation completely. I have always been a PC gamer as well as a console gamer, but mainly because the consoles had a lot of exclusive games that were fun. That really isn't the case this round, since both the PS4 and XBoxOne are really just PC hardware with some custom API's and OS. I always have had a half decent PC for being able to play games, and now most of all of the games I have been interested in have a PC version that I have been getting instead.

The exception of course was the Wii-U. The main reason why I picked it up was for my niece and nephew for MK8 and Splatoons (good intro to FPS games for children if you ask me) but that doesn't mean I wouldn't play it now that I have it.

I tried Splatoon for a bit during the free trial. I didn't care for it. That they default the tilt controls on is beyond stupid, and IDK, I generally didn't find the game much fun.

Splatoon was okay IMO but with the lack of content in that demo I was done in an hour. $60 way too much IMO but I guess PC gamer that has access to cheap arena shooters isn't N target demo.
I balked at the idea of paying $60 for a Mario editor but every video I see of it fills the nostalgia meter. I have no desire to make levels but I want to relive good times.

Beyonetta is quite a good beat-em-up. I have it fore PS3, but the Wii U version is supposed to be the definitive one. Comes on disc with the also excellent Bayonetta 2.

Smash Bros is great too. The fact that I'm able to pound the crap out of Mario as Sonic... 8 year old me would have lost his mind. 😀

Nintendo seriously need new IP. Didn't they just bought license to Sega game?

If Nintendo bought out Sega entirely and made a competent Sonic game, I would be so happy.

I think Sonic is harder than Dark Souls. Love Sonic but can never beat it. Anyone that can beat Sonic is a much better gamer than me. Major prop.

Splatoon is a new IP.

Yeah, but it basically castrates the Wii U. WiiMotion controllers don't work. You have almost no local multiplayer experience. You can't have multiple people online with the same console. There isn't a strong online network (voice chat, party chat, etc.). It's basically something where Nintendo has thrived on couch co-op, but their new IP throws that in the garbage.

To me, Splatoon is the Nintendo equivalent of 343's decision to cut local co-op for the Halo 5: Guardians campaign.

I do wish it had better local multiplayer options, otherwise it's the perfect game for me and my kids. They do a great job incorporating the gamepad too. Motion control is enabled by default (I turned it off, I hate the motion control gimmick). This game is perfect for the WiiU and it shows exactly what you can do with this console and why it is unique, so I'm not sure how it castrates anything.

Yeah, the tilt thing was a disaster. You could use the right stick for horizontal aiming in the tutorial, but not vertical, and you couldn't turn off the tilt. So, you were trying to aim with the right stick, and the tilt was screwing with the aim. It was truly awful.

Theres plenty of new tracks. And the old tracks look so much better. Theres enough new stuff to say its a NEW game and fun.

Windwaker HD is exactly like Windwaker, but in HD.

Super Mario Wii U feels like a cross between older games and had little originality.

In any case I'm still correct. AT LAUNCH the Wii U had nothing special going for it.

All of Nintendos previous consoles launched with at least one new game.

This was the main reason why I wasn't a launch day purchaser of the Wii U (unlike the Wii, Gamecube, N64). There was just nothing out that was really interesting. It took basically 3 years to have enough content to finally force me to purchase.

No, you're far from correct.

You're actually very wrong, as evidenced by the many other suggestions in this thread, and the inherent hypocrisy you leveraged while putting down Super Mario Wii U and propping up Mario Kart 8. Same argument applied, different outcomes. Just because you have a preference.

Back on topic, though.

Buy Runbow on the eShop. $15, up to 9 players locally, it is a blast. Platforming races, king of the hill, 1 vs. many, quest mode.

Or wait for shortylickens to tell you how it's derivative of something else and you should instead only buy the 8th iteration of a franchise for its originality.

I finally picked up one - new with SMB3DW and Nintendo Land (meh) for $225 shipped. Only games I'm interested in at this time are SMB3DW , Mario Maker and X.
