Wii to HDMI?

Hey guys,

I have an HDMI cable run through the wall, and I already have a cable box hooked up to it. I'd like to keep the Wii in the same cabinet and would rather not have to run another cable up to the TV.

Is there anyway to hook up both the cable box (HDMI) and the Wii (RCA) to some kind of HDMI splitter/switch so that I can use just the single HDMI cable running to the TV?

Yes, most new receivers will up convert the signal to an hdmi output.

There are also hundreds of video scalers that do the same thing but generally it is best to use a receiver as you get some added benefits.

I would use a component cable however though.

Onkyo TX-SR608 would be a good receiver but there are other used receiver for less money that do the same.

Composite is RCA. RCA is red/white/yellow.

Component is red/blue/green/white/red.

They both use RCA connectors. The color does not change that fact. RCA is the connector type. Both Composite and Component interfaces use RCA connectors.

Generally accepted nomenclature is stating RCA is Yellow/Red/White.

Component RCA is a component + Red/White.

SVideo RCA is a SVideo + Red/White

Without a preface RCA is assumed to be Yellow/Red/White.

Hence why there are over 500,000 message board posts on google asking the difference between RCA and component.

Just because 500,000 people don't know what to call something does not mean that that is an accepted nomenclature...

maybe when a cable box only has RF or composite outs people will understand what you mean by RCA, but lots of connection types use RCA plugs, some old speakers even use them, so RCA doesnt mean composite and audio.

Not stuck with using it just for a Wii. But you'd need an Audio RCA to headphone adapter for audio.

I should have specified in the OP, but I have two TV's side by side and the receiver is already hooked up to the main TV. The Wii is on the secondary TV, so I was hoping to not have to buy another receiver.

Between the scaler and the wii2hdmi, is one any better than the other?

Get an HDMI switch to connect through the single HDMI cable.

Either the scaler or the wii2hdmi should work fine. I would use the wii2hdmi myself, just becuase it's cheaper .

edit:

Another thing to note on the scaler vs the wii2hdmi is the output scaling. The wii2hdmi outputs in 480i or 480p, where as the scalar listed above is 720p only.

I would use the wii2hdmi, reviews seem quite good. Less things that can go wrong the better.

The TV will obviously scale the pixels to its native resolution or close to it (sometimes there may be a black border depending on the brand).

I know I'm late to this. I was thinking of getting that Scaler for the Wii. I think up-converting it to 720P would look a tad better. I assume it would be?

Unless your TV is really old I doubt its much if any better than the one in your TV and probably will increase input lag since you're double scaling.
