I don't use the wii that much but the remotes seem to be very unreliable to sync to the system. Well, I should say the second remote.

Say you play a one player game with the main remote, all is fine. You need to add a second person (a second remote) and you have to go to the remote settings to sync it. I normally have to hold down 1 and two on both remotes at least twice but more than likely three times before the second one is recognized. And it's not specific to one particular remote.
But then the next time you power on the wii, you have to do the same thing. I was talking to a neighbor up the road and he said he never has any issues????

Is there some trick to making both the remotes active every time you power on the wii?

BTW this is while playing the new Wii Sports Resort but it behaved the same way with the older one. I don't have any other games to test. Also, batteries are fully charged as well.

Unrelated question. My wii is linked to my neighbors wii and we have sent the wii characters and exchanged messages. Can we actually link up and play games head to head?

You are pairing it as a temporary guest remote. This does not overwrite the stored pairing information on the remote so that the owner can still conveniently use it with their own Wii.

You want to pair it properly like your original remote. To do so, turn on your Wii and, while it remains on the black screen, press the sync button under the Wii's SD card door and press the sync button in the Wii Remote's battery compartment. Voila.

There is a manual included with every remote, whether purchased with the system, a game (Wii Play), or individually. The pairing process is explained there.

People who can't figure this out have contributed to me getting loads of brand new Wii Remotes (opened and returned; never synced) for under $10 over the years... more than I know what to do with. If the remote doesn't flash when you press a button, it has never been properly paired with a console and has no stored pairing data so it doesn't try to initiate a connection.

As for your final question, yes, but you have to go through the same kind of crap for each game that supports it. Most will generate a "Friend Code" that you must exchange with the other player by other means. This is to ensure that Nintendo isn't held liable for, say, putting a child molester in contact with a child (they had to have had prior contact outside of the service). you must both own the game. Look for the Nintendo WiFi Connection logo on the box.

Thanks CZ. It's been so long since I set this up that I don't remember looking at the manual so I will read through it and find the syncing instructions.
