Not entirely positive this is allowed here, as it's on the legal boundary. But I'll wait to see what the higher ups think :)

It was only in the last few months that homebrew really started to go anywhere. One exploit that's currently being pursued is a save-game hack with Zelda: Twilight Princess. The advantage to this is that no modchip would be necessary and the Wii wouldn't have to be opened up to run homebrew. The guys working on the exploit have released a very barebone loader, but it's more a proof of concept; as of now it doesn't actually load anything, but according to them a full ELF loader is coming soon.

As far as apps, nothing's really available because up until recently homebrew wasn't even possible. Give it another year or so, though, and I'm sure we'll start to see some good software for Wii. I'm personally waiting for Wii media center that supports streaming media over WiFi and playback of DVDs. ;)

Check out wiibrew.org.

You can run Gamecube homebrew just fine, but I've never really found anything that I was that interested in.

If the Wii hacks allow for full hardware access, I've love to see a Wii Media Center.

Thanks guys for the info. Wii Media Center has to make an apperance. Watching Office and heroes reruns from NBC would be fantastic.

I wish the Wii browser was able to run the streaming episodes from those ABC/NBC that would rock.

I wish the browser was still free. WTF did they just randomly make it 500 wii points after it was free when it first came out?

Someone who isn't myself has a Wiikey installed. You can play burned Wii/GameCube games, GameCube/Wii homebrew, games from other regions, etc. Works perfect and isn't too bad to install.

If you're looking for a Wii Media Center, you could try out Wiideo Center.

It's not a standalone app really, but you run its service on your PC and use your Wii's Opera browser to browse to your PC's IP address (e.g., http://192.168.0.1:8080/index.jsp) and it's sort of a web interface for a media center. It supports .bin and .img (for DVD/VCD), .mp3, .avi, .mpg, etc etc. I used it for a bit, sorta neat, I'd say worth checkin out at least.

It was announced well before it even came out that it would only be free until somewhere around the middle of last year.
