I have been playing offline. Today I played online for a bit.
When playing offline, selecting plays and rolling out the quarterback work smoothly/quickly.
When playing online the play selection is delayed by a second or two. That is when scrolling through plays, it's slow.
Also, the quarterback goes in his own direction and I can't control him.

Is this normal for online?
 
Well I would assume that the quarter back going in his own direction is just lag from your input when playing online.
 
Most Wii online games are plagued by lag with the exception of Mario Kart. Because Wifi is the default online option for the Wii, most people use it. Very few of these people have it set up optimally. Many people have their Wii many feet and several walls away from the router. All kinds of packet loss and input delay occurs as a result of this. It's much better if you have friends to play with who have set up their Wifi for optimum reception.
