Wii HD question...

Now I know they aren't pushing HD or anything, and I do have a wii, but its on our regular def television. Now I want to rebuild my old gamecube library that I used to have on my HD tv, and I thought the HD titles that ran in 480P looked great! Now if I buy HD cables for the wii, will those titles still work in 480p??

480p is not HD, the Wii is not capable of HD games.

But if you have component cables, you can play 480p on any TV that has a component input on it. The TV does not have to be HD or anything to get the full effect.

ok I am mistaken, I meant to say just 480P, for whatever reason, it looked a lot better on my HD set in 480p than using the regular cables.

well, the regular cables are running it in 480i, so getting the component cables will get a better resolution. It is also possible your HD set upscaled the image on its own to produce a slightly better picture.

Correct me if I'm wrong. I thought that regular SDTV was only 320x240. Therefore, 480p is better than SDTV. So to get the full effect with component cables, you would need an EDTV (Enhanced Definition) or HDTV.

Okay I will correct you since you are wrong 😉

SDTV is 720x480.

SD = 480i

ED (or progressive scan) = 480p

To answer what I think your actual question is, yes, the Wii can play 480p Gamecube games in 480p.

The bold part isn't entirely true. Third string on my house's TV depth chart is a Toshiba (circa 1997 that WILL NOT DIE) with component inputs that are only capable of 480i.

Slightly more relevant to the thread: Mario Strikers Charged looks great at 480p on my 56" DLP. If you have a TV capable of 480p, get the component cables without a second thought.

I bought the component cables a while ago, since I wasn't using the component slots for anything else. However, the Wii may get downgraded to VGA when I get a Xbox360..

Do you mean RCA? I would consider VGA to be about equivalent to component.

SDTV is 720x480.

SD = 480i

ED (or progressive scan) = 480p

As a point of clarification, 480i is typically displayed at a 4:3 aspect ratio, so its resolution is usually 640x480. At a 16:9 aspect, it would be 720x480.

It's traditional to refer to standard definition as 480 lines of resolution, irrespective of aspect ratio.

Actually, I meant composite lol. Sorry, dunno why I said VGA.

Maybe it's my error, but I always thought RCA = Composite. Anyway, I referred to them as RCA since I figured the three letter acronym helped to cause the confusion.

Yeah, they're the same thing. I just call it composite because that is what my TV calls it 😛

Eep. RCA is a just a type of connection. RCA != Composite

Composite signals are usually carried over 1 RCA connection.
Component signals are carried over 3 separate RCA connections.
Analog audio is usually carried over 1 RCA connection for mono, 2 for stereo.
