Q: Does Wii include an internal hard drive?

A: No. The console boasts 512 megabytes of internal flash memory. This memory will be used to store Virtual Console downloads and other data.

Q: 512 megabytes doesn't seem like much. Do Wii owners have any other storage options?

A: Yes. Wii owners can expand the system's storage capacity by plugging in a separately sold SD memory card. SD memory cards currently enable up to 8 gigabytes of storage - about 15 times the storage capacity of Wii's internal flash RAM and almost half that of an Xbox 360's 20 gigabyte hard drive. 8 gigabyte SD cards currently retail for about $270 and will see dramatic price reductions during Wii's life cycle.

Nintendo has also hinted that Wii owners may be able to connect a USB-powered external hard drive to Wii, although it has never officially announced compatibility. Supposing this does turn out to be true, an exciting number of storage options become available. Currently, a 100 gigabyte external USB hard drive retails for fewer than $100 on the market - and like SD cards - the cost will continue to decrease.

that must be an old article because you can get a 500 GB external for less than $150

Ok thanks for the response. I am curious how long the 512meg will hold me over. I might get the 2gb SD card, but no way I want to play $270 for the 8gig SD card.

thx

thats an old article. i know you can get 4gb SD cards fro about $50 so I'd say its safe to assume that an 8 GB is about $100 now.

It's nice that at least one of the companies decided to use such a standardized, easily swappable format such as SD instead of price gouging us for some crazy amount on a proprietary 512MB card.

I know our local Microcenter had 2gb cards for $15 for a while and that should be more than enough for my needs judging by the Wii's current functionality.

Yep. SD cards are dirt cheap in comparison to the proprietary memory cards of other consoles. I grabbed a 2gb for $10 a couple months ago and haven't even scratched the surface of it in my Wii.

when i had my wii, i had 5 wii games with save data and 5 VC games, the browser, and all the channels and i still had plenty of room left on the internal memory.

"wow so you bought a $250 wii and had no clue what it came with?"

Yep. I played one for 30min at in-laws and loved it, I did not look into specs as I had not planned on getting 1 for 2-4months due too demand.

Then wife calls me on my way home and says, Mom called and she got one at the Gamestop and they have more. I was only about 20min from their, went in and got one. Got a couple of games and a recharger unit but that was it.

Love Wii tennis :)

Wii Will Wii Will rock you!

I love my Wii. I bought 4 2gb SD cards for 8 bucks a pop. I havent even fill one up yet and have downloaded tons of games. Unlike my Xbox 360 with its 20gb HD which is already full.

While I agree that is likely the reason why MS and Sony use their own formats and subsequently charge more, I don't think it's an issue of being fair. Why should the reasoning matter to end consumer John Q. Public? A negative bullet point is a negative bullet point. They chose their own business models.
