Wii graphics specs?

I was wondering if there's any hard facts about what the Wii will have under its cover as far as its graphics performance is concerned? I've heard it won't support HDTV, which is a huge bummer in my book. Anyone know what kind of chip they're using and how it compares to some of the PC graphics cards?

Thanks!

No 720p on the Wii? I was thinking of buying one of those, but now I'm suddenly not so sure as I plan to totally HD my house soon enough.

720p isn't even HD in my book, I mean monitors have had higher then that for years, so I don't give a crap if the Wii has 720p or not. 1080p is another story, but until cable starts giving me 1080p a "HD" tv is coming nowhere near my house...

How is 720p not HD? I am in the United Kingdom, 1080i and 1080p is just a fantasy for those of us stuck in the dark ages. 720p is just coming out, lol.

Because My monitor costs 10% of 720p tv's and has more pixels, so Why would i say 720p is HD? I understand it's a dream to even have 720p on more then a couple channels, but i'm am severly annoyed at the whole industry for saying how highly defined 720p is, when in reality it's fairly old tech.

You're just spoiled. :p I am stuck watching stuff in PAL because it's too much hassle to connect my satellite reciever to my PC, and even if I did a PAL signal would just look messed up on a 1440x900 panel.

I would be happy as hell with a 720p TV (or my own monitor) with a 720p broadcast. :(

Spoiled? I don't actually watch TV much anymore, it's given way to my computer obssesion. I just think the general population is misinformed on how highly defined high definition is.

I'm sure 1080i is amazing but unfortunately I won't get to experience it for a few years I imagine. To me 720p looks worlds better than PAL, but I guess it's personal taste really.

to tell you the truth 720p looks amazing, going from standerd definition. But when your used to a computer monitor, and haven't turned the tv on for at least 3 days, 720p seems normal.

Aye I bet. What's worse is I'm not only stuck with PAL, the TV in here is a 14" portable POS. :D That's pretty much the main reason I can't wait to jump on a ~30" 720p display, but there's not enough channels broadcasting in 720p or 1080i on SkyHD to justify upgrading anything at all yet.

I agree with a lot of videogames101 sentiments. I'm not as against 720p, but I'm not planning on spending $1,000 on a set until there is more programming (preferrably at 1080). I'm a video buff too, but the upgrade isn't worth the cost to me at this time and won't be until most programming is offered in HD.

LOL sorry. :( On-topic though; I know Wii would play fine on my standard PAL TV as it's 480i, but how would it really look on a 720p display?

Would it black-bar or stretch horribly or what? I can't imagine it looking good either way.

Am I going to have to keep an SDTV around to play it properly? Because I don't plan to buy an Xbox 360 or a PS3.

Nintendo is trying to keep the numbers under wraps because the Wii is so underpowered when compared to the 360/PS3. All you'll find is "Broadway CPU" and "Hollywood GPU", though the CPU is rumored to be 729mhz, that's never been officially confirmed. They also haven't said a thing about how much ram the Wii has. It's a refreshed Gamecube basically, with a next gen price tag.

It's not that simple, does your definition of "Next Gen" only concern graphics? then yes, "It's a refreshed Gamecube basically, with a next gen price tag".

But, eventhough I am a xbox fan and probably will never buy a Wii, I have to say that Nintendo's "Next Gen" isn't graphics, it's gameplay. Personaly I don't think the Wii will be an ounce of fun, but they decided to take the gameplay and make it Next Gen instead of the graphics, and so I believe it definitly deserves a "Next Gen" price tag.

It was an extremely smart move now that I think of it, competing with the 360 and Ps3 directly would be suicide. they got their own thing going on, and while HD should have definitly been included in the Wii (I think no HD will cost them heavily) visuals is not what they are going for, it's the gameplay.

720p is a ton better than DVD quality (which is usually 480p). 1280x720 @ 60fps provides a wonderful picture. However the specs I've seen show the Wii supporting widescreen 480p - which should be plenty (current DVD quality, only I'd bet with higher frame rate given movies run at 24fps)

While not HD, ~852x480 @30-60fps should be enough for the graphics not to be a distraction - perhaps even surprisingly pleasing if the developer does their job well (some of the Wii screens and gameplay footage really do look fantastic - even more so when considering the hardware)

meh. i don't even have a 720p hdtv so i don't care.
cutting on the res allows Wii's weaker gpu to display effect and grpahics equal to better than ps3 and xb360
remember even a 6600gt level card can play oblivion maxed out at 640x480.
now imagine if the software was optimsed for the gpu. i expect better than oblivion graphics on the Wii

Probably has an x700 inside. I am so confused as to why people are so excited about this thing. They could have easily made the nunchaku controller an add on to the GCN. I agree with the next gen price. They also lied about that and changed it from 199 to 250 (understandably, however).

My little bro wants this thang bad but I'm trying to show him the light. Low res FTL. (BTW, I don't like xbox360 or ps3 either...)
NES FTW!
