Wii for a 3 year old?

I was thinking about getting my 3 year old a Wii but am thinking maybe he ain't old enough? I've never got to play one. Only place in my area that has it on display is Gamestop and everytime I try to check it out, something on it ain't working. Which might be a bad thing. Of course I will mess around with it myself.

He might end up throwing the controller at the TV due to frustration or hand slipping. I suggest getting your child a retro game console like the (S)NES or the Genesis. These consoles are cheaper, simpler (especially on the NES) and the games feature cute, colourful, cartoonlike characters. And, when he's asleep, you can sneak in a few hours of Super Mario World. 😉

I bought my Wii when my daughter was 3. She played Wii Sports and enjoyed it. She's 4 now and is very good at bowling. She beats me all the time.

She also likes the jig-saw puzzle feature of the picture viewer program.

Eh, get him a handheld like a DS or PSP. MUCH more fun, plus he will have something to do in the car or at stores and such.

There's no shame in admitting you want to play Super Mario Galaxy. I'm sure you're 3-year old will enjoy watching you play 😉

QFT. I bought one for my daughter for her B-day. She's 5, and loves collecting stars for me. It's awesome, and we have a blast.

She plays Mario and Sonic, Mario Party, and Galaxy with me.

I wanted it for Prime 3, and I can't beleive Galaxy topped that game. I've played all of the Mario games, since Donkey Kong, and have to say that Galaxy tops them all. So much depth, varieties in gameplay, and the level designs are just amazing.

Is your last name Einstein or Oppenheimer?

Sci Fi's Channel's 'Eureka' TV series:
Carter happens upon Eureka after he and his rebellious daughter get into a car accident just outside the city limits. When they reach downtown, he approaches a youngster, no older than 10, for directions. His bicycle basket holds a textbook for theoretical physics.

When Carter's daughter calls the boy an Einstein, he responds, "I'm an Oppenheimer. The Einsteins live on Fourth."

Ditto. Add the list of possible retro game consoles, some of those all-in-one units (Cartidge ROMs built into the system) that you may (or may not) see at Target, Walmart, etc. These systems show up around christmas time, and stock is always low. But it is worth considering as an option if you see them for sell. Amazon may even sell them but I almost never shop with them.

My 2yr old daughter plays it well. Sports and Spongebob. She'll be 3 in a month, been playin for a couple months.

3 seems a little young to be getting a child started on video games. What about a tricycle, 3 wheels, 3 years of age. Physical activity, outdoors?

QFT.

Plugging your kids into electronics at such a young age will make them a retard. Spend QT with your kid like reading or doing something outdoors.

Spending quality time with your kids and a game console are not mutually exclusive things though. And as far as the OP question goes, the Wii in comparison to all the other consoles, is probably a good choice for a kid.

If you're willing to have that kid play the Wii, it's best to train him on it. Otherwise he just may break it.

I wasn't aware that merely having a game console in your household precludes your children from being able to play outside or read.

It's no different than anything else. As long as you do it in moderation, it is fine. I let my 5-year old son play on the 360 for an hour a day as long as he doesn't misbehave. It's good for rainy/cold/sick days.

And yet, I still manage to sit down with him and read before bed almost every night.

I have a friend with a son a little over 3 and while he plays the Wii with his 6 year old brother but IMO he's a little young. They play bowling or baseball together and while he's having fun it's more like imitation than playing. He has fun though so why not?

Yeah I don't really think a 3 year old has the mental capacity to realise that his actions are causing an affect to the player on the screen, yet alone have the coordination skills to make the purchase of a Wii worthwhile.

Now if you were buying the Wii for yourself and letting the child play occasionally then that's a different story. Or if the Wii had easy to use active learning games.

I mean psychologically children at the age of 3 aren't even conscious of being alive, and memories aren't formed yet alone remembered at that age. Think back, how old were you when you have your first memory?

He gets/has all that. I don't plan on letting him sit on it all day. Yeah for $250 I will be playing it myself and watching him the time he is trying to play it. But yeah I wanted something for us both and I'm not into old school gaming(SNES/NES) or I would just get him a old school console.

My three year old plays tennis with me, and is learning to bowl.

I got the Wii about two weeks ago, and after only a few tries, she's getting it. I don't think three's too young at all - at least in a frame of moderation. It's a great yucky-day/Sunday morning toy.

You obviously don't have/have never had kids near the age being discussed.

video games + developing kids = very bad.

there is much to be said about hand-eye coordination, but in terms of developing creative, complex thought processes, video games are pretty bad.

the brain works overtime while reading, developing its own images rather than having them forced in via visual stimulus. the same reason that the majority of Baby Einstein nonsense is more damaging than it is helpful.
