There goes my fitness plan for 2008

But later in the interview, Miyamoto reveals that maintaining physical fitness isn't actually the point of the game. "I forgot to mention something earlier: I don't think Wii Fit's purpose is to make you fit; what it's actually aiming to do is make you aware of your body," he said.

"If you're standing still, and it tells you "Your body is swaying," you can see on the training results screen that your body has been shaking. But I think you'd never realize that your body is shaking in day-to-day life. I think becoming aware of things like this about yourself is quite interesting."

Ok, so Shiggy says its not meant to get you fit, but this article at Kotaku says "Hey, it works, sorta."

I must confess: When I saw Wii Fit at E3 last year, I hated it. Really, really hated it. And when I bought it for this feature, I still hated it. Then I started using it, and the hate started dissipating. Nintendo's doing its own thing now, for better or worse. And taking Wii Fit for what it is, the game works. My wife and my kid really enjoy it, and it's a horrible cliche, but playing it with them has been good fun. Yes, it doesn't have online. Yes, there should be downloadable exercises. Yes, it should do more. Things can always be made better, and hopefully, Nintendo realizes that. Will I keep using Wii Fit? Probably. It's going to be Spring soon, you know. And I'll need something to track my progress while I go power walking by the river.

Maybe he's just saying it won't get you fit so they don't have some class action lawsuit from fat people who bought the game, put the disc in the Wii, and thought that it automatically made them thin.

So, I'm not a stuntman (Stuntman: Ignition) or a time-traveling, soldier/scientist (Timeshift)?

Gimmick or not, I can see a few people taking part in a little more physical activity than they normally would.

how is it a gimmick? if anyone thought a board with sensors on it would make you fit... that person is completely delusional. It's just another input method. One I hope picks up, but doubtful it will, just like the zapper.

Well the zapper didn't pick up because it SUCKED.

Hopefully the Wiifit board won't, but I don't see how the board could really be that useful.

Yah, Zapper blew, but I thought Crossbow Training was worth the cost of entry. Just never use the Zapper. As for Wii Fit, I bet if you only did hula hoops, jogging in place, and pushups, and you did them a bunch, you could definitely get "more fit"

I dont know if you can really compare a plastic shell that holds an existing controller, to something that offers completely new functionality. :)

You can play WiiSports with minimal effort and get more of an exercise during a Baywatch marathon. You kind of can't put in minimal effort into DDR and still actually pass a song. Unless of course you do the slowest song on easy and put the bar depletion on very easy.

True, but I was just pointing out that saying "the only game with fitness value is DDR" is a bit short sighted. You'll get back what you put into any of these games.

Well, this is a downer. I was hoping it provided you with good workout routines. :(

I hope the public response shows Nintendo that demand for such a game which aims at true workouts is out there. There is money to be made.

I dont know about routines, but it does have activities that will help you exercise. Things like Yoga, Step Aerobics, Jogging and Pushups. It'll make you more active than just sitting on the couch with a controller in your hand, thats for sure.

I was just looking for something which burns an adequate amount of calories and maybe adds a little tone. I am not overweight and I do not eat unhealthy, but I don't do any exercise either. My metabolism is pretty good, but burning a chunk of my daily calories would do well to keep my weight neutral. If it does that, then I will be happy.
