Hi all,
Got Wii Fit on Friday on pre-order. Got a gimmicky free sport bag with the logo on for pre-ordering with the shop, but what the hey, free is free!
Point 1: The board is heavier than you expect. When you un-box it, it feels solid and very well made.
First of all you need to sync the board with the Wii by means of the red manual sync button behind the SD card slot door. This takes 20 seconds, if that and only has to be done once.
Fire up the software and do the initial body test which comprises of weighing and balance tests.
On to the activities. You have Yoga, Muscle, Aerobic and 'games' (can remember proper name).
Yoga instantly impressed the GF. She loves yoga and was interested in how it would work with the board. Initial results are very good, and the software can tell when you are not doing the move correctly based upon balance and movement on the board.
Muscle workouts appear focused on specific areas (note that there are 'unlocks', just like any game, based on time spent on the system), such as upper body, abs, etc. The ab workout has you doing the move and bringing your feet down on the board registering a crunch. You could cheat, but then you would only be cheating yourself. With workouts such as the press-ups, it knows if you cheat.
Aerobic exercises are things such as step, jogging on the spot, etc. I only tried jogging and step. The jogging uses the Wii-mote as a pedometer and you have to put it into a pocket or the waist band of whatever you are wearing. This was a surprising workout, as jogging on the spot is easy, until you have a runner in front of you to keep up with, although you must not pass them! You'll get told off!
The 'game' section is good fun. The skiing is initially harder than you expect. Leaning forward speed up your character, while shifting weight back slows you down. Missing gates invokes a penalty and this is added on to your time at the end of the run. the basic run is straight and you can see right down all the way. Advanced adds a sweeping course, blind drops more gates and a longer course.
Other games include the hula game, which is fun and means you get to watch your GF wiggle it for points, the heading game, which is fun and frustrating when hit in the face by boots and Pandas (yeah, flying Pandas). Ski jumping is fun, but as my GF found out the 'do not jump on the board' warning is taken seriously. She jumped by mistake while doing a move in one game. This stopped the game in progress to warn her not to jump on the board!
All in first impressions are good. Sure you're not going to be able to train for the Olympics or a Marathon via Wii Fit, but I can definitely see it as an addition to an existing regime.
