Does anyone know if this is possible? I wanted to see if I could stream video clips or show photos from a mac laptop to a Samsung smart tv. This does work on a PC, I just tested it...

Do you have to use any 3rd party software on Windows to make it work (I assume yes).

No. You just have to turn on file sharing and set the media to be shared and it works on Win7 (and 8 too I assume).

Ah, so the TV is pulling the files, rather than the PC pushing them.

Do you have the files shared in OS X? With SMB sharing turned on?

yes, you just need something that is compliant with DLNA. on OSX i've used:
Universal Media Server
PS3 Media Server

However I find that the Samsung DLNA client is somewhat finicky and I prefer to just plug a hard drive in via USB
