My 2 neighbours share their internet connection using a D-Link DI-604. They get good signal, but when I tried to hop into the bandwagon I wasn't so lucky.

This is a really old model, so I'm thinking switching to something newer might help my cause. I'm probably gonna buy it for them, so I'd like to know what's my best option. Is the WRT54GL my best bet?

Is the GL the same as the old v1-4 WRTs? (someone help me out here)

If so, yes they have good radios, and you can put custom firmware on them which gives you the option to boost transmit power.

Getting a good antenna for your wireless card is a good option too, a nice directional one will give you great reception, and you could turn up the transmit power on your end.

There are very little differences between Entry Level Wireless units that are working OK; they all are 30-33mW radios.

It possible that you are out of range and none of the Entry Level Wireless would help you.

You can try on your side a Wireless Card with an external Directional Antenna pointing to the source.

]Yap, if the combo of this Router, http://www.buffalotech.com/products/pro...detail.php?productid=150&categoryid=32

One of these Cards with External Antenna on the client side.

PCMCIA, http://www.buffalotech.com/products/pro...detail.php?productid=110&categoryid=29

Or, PCI, http://www.buffalotech.com/products/pro...-detail.php?productid=46&categoryid=30

If it does not work, then you need Pro hardware or extending the distance with additional hardware.

The best Method to Extend Wireless Coverage depends heavily on the Specific Environment.

Look at these pages they describe most of the options that are within the means of Entry Level users, and choose the one that fits you environment best.

Link to: Extending the Distance of Entry Level Wireless Network.

Link to: Wirelessly Bridging Home / Network.

Link to: Hi Gain Antenna for Entry Level Wireless.

In general, the best Method involves using multiple units connected with wire to the source.

Or WDS ( Wireless Network - Configuration Modes. ) system using Hardware of one Brand across the board (WDS cuts the bandwidth by half pass the WDS unit).
