Since you want wireless, you will need to get the wireless router. You would really only need the AP if you have a bigger house that your signal strength weakens in parts of it. The AP is for like range expansion.

well a Access point is just a device that sends the network wirelessly.. the wireless router has an access point built in, if you already have a router then you can get an access point to hook up to it, but if you do not you should really get a wireless router so you will have NAT and Firewall protection.

In your scenario, the bottom line in which to choose, Dedicated AP or AP/Router combo (All wireless routers are AP/Router combo's) is, do you have more than one machine that needs interent access. If so, or if you plan on adding nodes, then a Rouer/AP combo would be the choice. If you have a single laptop and you never plan on ever having anything but that one workstation, then an AP would do fine. Very few people would choose the latter. If for nothing else, Router/AP combo's are typically less expensive than dedicated AP's. But most also have more than one box, or will eventually.

That's the wrong class of product for cable -- it has a DSL modem. Simpler non-modem devices such as the X-550 from the same vendor would be better suited where there's a cable modem.
