Does wireless range extenders need to be hard wired to the existing router?

Having done research on the subject, it seems like the only reliable way to extend your wifi network is using an extender that's connected to your network via a wire. You can extend it purely through wifi but this cuts your wifi range and bandwidth and is unreliable.

Extender (also call a repeater) connect to the Wireless router via the wireless, and then transmit further the signal (hence extender). I.e., No wire.

On the negative side, you need to make sure that the Extender that you get works with your specific Router. You also lose half of the Speed past the extender.

If possible, the better way is to use a second Wireless Router with a cable and configure it as an Access Point.

i bought this about 6 months ago

works great - all you do is plug it in an electric outlet and it repeats your wifi connection.

of course, you have to set it up initially - literally took about 30 seconds to set up.

EDIT: I should say that last night I had a hard time streaming 1080p video from my PC to my galaxy tab, but no problems streaming SD movies, or even Netflix at all.
