I don't understand why Motorola would think they could charge a premium over Apple hardware and get away with it. At least RIM understands that the upper bound for pricing is what Apple offers their products at.

Very happy to hear this. Meeting up with a RIM employee on Sat to see if I can get one early...and a lot cheaper than $500 :)

Meh. Until iOS can perform at the level of the new tablet OSes that are coming out, I'm done with Apple for the time being. I love(d) my iPad but now it's time for me to move on.

Wow, a manufacturer actually keeping their word on pricing...

I'm torn, after getting a MacBook Air, I still like tablets and feel like I'm living in the future and everything, but if the manufacturers step up the ultraportable laptop game a bit, I can see tablet sales slowing. A $1000 ultraportable like the Air isn't going to rock the market like a $500 tablet, but, I think a lot of tablets are going to sit unused after people want to do more with a tablet and find it's OS limited...

Dude... Playbook is the ONLY device that doesn't do MOBILE WEB BROWSING. it does FULL Web!!! Meaning, Hulu! NBC! FREE!

that is way better than anything else out there right now, including PS3's web browser!

I know you don't want to hear this... but I'm serious. Iphones/iPads have apps to do that already. I think android might get hulu soon too if it doesn't already. Seems kind of silly to be so excited for something you can already do...

Yeah, if you want to pay money for it. I'd much rather watch it for free on the Playbook.

Well, it is very competitive imho, because the hardware is designed for maximum power. The PlayBook is great, specs-wise, but I feel I'd rather have Android. It would be great if the Xoom gets a price-cut before the end of the summer, and hopefully Motorola shows they have some capability of intelligence and decide to price the wifi-only version at $500, doubtful though. Really, Motorola has been great, but jesus, WTH are they thinking?
It's the clear winner when it comes to tablets, as it offers the max size (still not sure personally if I'd prefer 7" like the nookColor or 10" like the Xoom/iPad) and amazing hardware - yet, RIM has essentially matched it (only nagging question: display quality and actual GPU, as the GPU is known on the Tegra 2 platform).

The difference in terms of competitiveness is rather simple: do you want raw power, or more comfortable saving at least 50% and getting a capable machine, that is really only supported by the developer community - versus having official manufacturer support when it comes to the full OS experience?

I still wouldn't trade in my rooted nookColor, great price for what it packs... essentially a quite-capable smartphone with a large display, minus the phone. Developer community is still fairly fresh, so there is time yet for massive gains in the tablet experience.

But still, it cannot match what the Xoom offers (when comparing Android to Android). But I decided that with a smartphone upgrade in a few months (hopefully), and a planned desktop rebuild in the fall... I don't want to pay a premium for a tablet, something I know I wont use nearly as much when compared to my smartphone and desktop.
For now, I plan to enjoy my nookColor, and let the Android tablet market mature a little more, and possibly get a full tablet later.

The Playbook has a TI OMAP 4 SoC so it has a PowerVR SGX 540 gpu whcih is a hardly a bad thing as it's the fasest gpu aside from Tegra 2.

Everything I have heard about the screen is positive but we will likely have to wait until it is released to get specifics on it.

:thumbsup: Smart. The biggest question with these new tablets are how apps would run and what kind of support they may have. This shows that at least EA is on board which should attract other devs.

Apps run amazingly. There have been a metric ton of OpenGL demos on this device, most running simultaneously, not just hibernating in the background while another app runs foreground. If NFS isn't smooth, it won't be the dual core OMAP 4 powerVR powered guts that are the problem, it will be EA.
