Wifi on Windows: Wireless Zero Config. versus Mfg. Utility

Is there any advantage to using a vendor's utility for my wireless connection, over XP's Wireless Zero Configuration?

Thanks
Stewart

Depends on the chipset driving your wireless antenna. In many cases, the default Windows system can work fine, but for some hardware manufacturers, a custom driver/application might work better.

I use XP's wireless zero configuration but I have the Linksys Utility installed. Is it ok if I uninstall the Utility or jsut stop it from running?

You would probably be fine. I've just been installing the drivers & removing the software (if they came as a single package) and then just using the windows utility.

It is best to stick with Windows WZC if at all possible. Only for VERY select reasons should you go with a third party utility.

I prefer Intel ProSET/Wireless to WZC. WZC sucks.

I think the point is that the wzc is the safest bet. Many of the utes can cause problems, and most especially MANY OF THE FREAKIN' IDIOTS WHO WRITE THE UTES MAKE IT DAMN HARD IF NOT IMPOSSIBLE TO ACTUALLY DISCONNECT FROM A WIRELESS NETWORK.
Ok, got that off my chest. In my computer shop I can't tell you the time spent trying to disconnect from a certain wireless network that covers my town. Its an open network that lets you connect to the network with no security, then only lets you go their home page to sign up and pay so you can surf.
Its amazing how many utes are designed to automatically connect to the first unsecured wireless network they see, then make it impossible to disconnect if there is no other network around to connect to.
