WiFi on router slower than on wired

I've noticed that when I do a speed test on my phone, it is slower than on my wired PC. I am getting around 36MB/s on computer while about 17MB/s on phone and tested on Chromebook and was about 22MB/s.

I am running Buffalo WHR-G54S with Tomato 1.28 and have logging turned off and most of settings set to the default.

I changed to several different channels but haven't seen much if any improvement. I am wondering if there is something I can do to improve WiFi speeds.

Wireless traffic, like wired, will be dependent on the device at both ends of the communication. Is the phone capable of wireless downloads in excess of 17MB/s? That's about 136mbps, btw.

You should probably let us in on which phone you're using and which chromebook you're using.

WEP/WPA (password protection on wi-fi) adds probably almost as much as 30% overhead to the traffic flow. The speed at which the device can encrypt/decrypt WEP/WPA could influence things, too.

Yep, my Galaxy S8 is capable of higher speeds. At someone elses house I got 59MB/s.

WPA2 Personal (PSK) + AES

I was just looking at that Buffalo WHR-G54S. That's wireless G. It maxes at 54mbps. You shouldn't be getting 22MB/s or 17MB/s with that router.

Caps on MB/s vs mb/s makes a huge difference. Are you sure you mean MB/s?

megabits per sec = mbps = mb/s
mega bytes per sec = MB/s

Well, apparently I shouldn't glance Wireless-G and assume 54mbps.

"The AirStation Whr-G54S Wireless Cable/DSL Smart Router combines the 125 Mbps High Speed Mode wireless performance with Buffalo's AirStation One-Touch Secure System (Aoss). It increases "real world" wireless performance up to 35% compared to a standard Ieee 802.11g Router."

If you're getting 17 megabits per second, there's an issue. Because even a generic Wireless-G router should accommodate 30+ megabits per second even with any kind of WEP/WPA overhead.

So I turned off Wifi security and notice that there appears to be less latency, websites slightly snappier on phone but speed is still the same.

For better understanding of the big picture, what kind of plan are you paying for with your ISP?

Well, it's hard to tell you what to do next, but if I were in your shoes, I'd be looking at upgrading my router. That beast looks like it's originally from 2004.

Though admittedly, I can't fathom what you'd need more than 17mbps for on a phone. That's surely good enough for any kind of streaming/video watching, and phones aren't typically used for any other massive downloads.

I've been trying numerous things, changing some of the advanced settings in Tomato then restarting speed test. 20 megabits per second so far max on Galaxy S8 mobile device.
