I am little lost here., I want to buy a Wifi router and there seems to be two Varity :
Wireless Router & Wireless Modem Router.

Now my internet connection is this way: Operator fiber comes to my building terrace, frm there there is cat5 and tht wire goes directly into my desktop Lan card. Now to run this setup, which router I have to buy?

Also, I have checked out reviews and stuff… the model I have selected seems to be having one port for connection and in all photos its labeled as “Modem”! The model is Belkin N600DB.

a Modem/Router has both a modem (usually DSL or cable), and a router, combined into one. They generally don't have a separate ethernet WAN port, instead, they have a RJ-11 (for DSL), or a coax (for cable) WAN port.

It sounds like your internet is delivered via CAT5, so you would want a regular router, not a modem/router combo.

From the spec sheets, that appears to be a normal router, not a modem/router.

Edit: The port labeled "modem" on that router, is the ethernet WAN port. It is simply telling you to connect that to your modem (cable or DSL, or in your case, just your incoming CAT5).

Go Wireless Router. Keep modem a separate product, supplied/supported by your ISP. These are usually DSL modems.

If you don't need WiFi, get a router sans WiFi for security reasons.
If you DO need WiFi, get either a WiFi router or a sans-WiFi router and add to it a WiFi Access Point.

A plain router would make little sense, since you would need a device to modulate and demodulate the fibre signals. I agree with the comment above, ask your ISP to supply you with a dedicated modem, and get a wired router.

Not sure what the other posters are thinking with what they said but you don't need a modem for a fiber based internet - there's nothing to modulate or demodulate. Fiber is usually ethernet based. Since you have an incoming cat5 cable that goes to your desktop currently, just buy a wireless router, any should do. Plug the cat5 cable that you have into the WAN port of the wireless router and voila.
