My laptop has a minipci slot (Has a modem in it now) but I was wondering if I would be able to upgrade it with a 802.11B minipci card. I've heard that your laptop needs to have built in antennas for the minipci wifi card to work. Is that true?

Without the antennas, it would be like using a walkie talkie with the antenna snapped off. It would work, but you would have to stand right next the person with the other radio. If it is an older unit, there is also a slight chance that it would not recognize the card. It would be cheaper and much easier to just use a PCMCIA WI-FI card.

Many questions need to be answered before we could answer urs like what kind of lappy what model. What ur budget is. What ur tech skills are. things of that nature. But if it is a newer lappy and you know ur way around a desktop/laptop. Have the spare change to get the part and a new laptop if you break something in the process. then yes it could be done.

there are 3 kinds of minipci cards on laptops. ethernet and phone cards use minipci 2. wifi cards use minipci 3. the are different sizes, and use different "connectors"
