WiFi disconnects at regular interval - SOLVED!

Solved it totally by accident. For some odd reason my Hauppauge WinTV adapter is causing the dropouts. No idea why. It's always with me and the one time I took my Surface elsewhere to test, it was connected because I wanted to show it off.

I depend on my WinTV adapter a lot, so I have to figure this out soon. I NEVER disconnect it and have been using it with Windows Media Center for a little while now.

I bought a powerline adapter for my other laptop, and may just buy an extender for my Surface now.

I am just happy it's not a hardware issue with my Surface internals. 😛

Original post below:

I never thought I'd ever be asking for help for a computer problem, but here goes.

My WiFi connection drops every 30 seconds or so, and recovers each time. It's almost a perfect interval.

Microsoft Surface Pro 1
Avastar 350N WiFi adapter

Stuff I've tried to fix.
Disabled all Power Management on WiFi adapter/BT
Restored Surface to Windows 8, 8.1 and Preview 10
Changed Security on router to WEP, None and WPA2
Changed Router, One TP Link, One Cablevision Provided.
Tried at another location.
2.4GHz or 5GHz, same deal.

I'm guessing the WiFi adapter is shot. Sucks, since this machine was a replacement and there is no warranty left.

It's just the interval that is killing me, as if it's software related. It doesn't matter if I am downloading or anything, it just quits every 30 seconds.

How strong and stable is the signal that your Wi-Fi is connecting to?

Pretty strong, I am only a couple of feet away.

I *think* I may have found something, but can't try it right now since I am not at the computer -- it may be my Bluetooth mouse causing the issue. I guess the card is a WiFi/BT hybrid.

I Googled a little bit with slightly different keywords and noticed someone else had the same issue as me because his MS Sculpt mouse was acting up. Mine has been acting strangely with a few computers.

I won't be able to test until late tonight.

Is your Wifi N type or the new AC? Some wireless mice do share the same radio frequencies. It is one of the reasons why I went back to a wired mouse.

A/B/G/N - I am dying to go home and check.
I don't want to replace it, but it's annoying me a lot and I don't want to spend money.

Have you tried changing the channel the router broadcasts on? How about (if possible) shutting off one of the bands (2.4ghz or 5ghz)?

Also, I'm not too familiar with the Surface, but are you able to uninstall the wireless drivers and let the device automatically install?

I haven't been in school for a while, but I'd start with this.

Good luck!

Yeah, tried that. I even changed region on my router to enable Channels 12-14 and same thing.

I am home now and will update if disabling bluetooth fixes the issue. Just got home and it's time to cook. 🙂

Since there are newer protocols and such in Bluetooth to lessen interference, turning it off would be unnecessary. Unless this is old hardware. Not sure if this really is a BT problem though. Could be driver or hardware problem.

Confirming my fix in case someone out there has a similar issue and runs into this thread.

I had my coax wire (for WinTV adapter) coiled up behind my Dell monitor, and after re-positioning it behind my desk, the WiFi works perfectly. Not a single stutter or hiccup and completely stable.

I've moved my PowerLine adapter to another outlet to use with my other laptop, which only had 1x1 N.
