wifi caps at around 100kb/s?

I'm using WRT54GL router with default tomato settings. WPA2/AES. I've tried different channels but my wifi caps at around 100 kb/s. If i'm uploading 20 kb/s i can only d/l 80 kb/s on torrent. But it also occurs with direct downloads like off steam. However if i disconnect and reconnect to my network i can d/l up to 1.5 mb/s. Eventually a slowdown occurs again, sometimes it's after right away, 10 minutes or a several hours. Anybody know why this can occur?

Is it wifi only or also when connecting to router with ethernet cable?

maybe your isp is blocking certain traffic or because of "line sharing" eg. too many users online it gets slow.

Sounds like you have too many connections from your torrent program. Limit the amount of upload and download connections. I've found around 15-20 download and 3 upload are usually ok with most routers/connections.

My ethernet is always fast. I was thinking it was torrent but then i noticed it happening with direct downloads too so i don't know. Unless it's still affecting the router afterwards?

I do have 3 cordless phones in the house, maybe ill try turning them all off and see what happens.

I don't know the technical part of it but trust me, limit the connections utorrent or whatever client you use can make. If you let it go hog wild too many connections will be made and your router will come to a screeching halt until you restart it. Seen it happen too many times. Try my suggested amount of connections above.

Debug process starts with isolation.

Put the Wireless computer near the Router.

Make sure that No one is using the Phones, and they are on the hook.

Kill the "cancerous" Torrent.

Make sure that No one else is tasking the Internet Connection.

Try one normal honest download from a fast server.

Good 802.11g should yield about 2MB/sec. (B=Byte) in max capacity.

Cap (limit) your upstream and maybe reduce the number of simultaneous torrents the problem will disappear. Alternatively, upgrade your router.

Thanks for the replies. Looks like vuze was leaving my wifi slown down even after I stop using it. But after a reset and not touching it my speeds have been good. Limiting peers to 60 didn't help too much. Might be a time to get a new router. It is like 3 years old now.
