EDIT: PC card and drivers are installed in my sister's laptop. For some reason, I can't connect to my home network :( It keeps saying that "One or more wireless networks are available". I type in the encryption key and click Connect, but it won't connect.

I have a Thinkpad T23 with built in Wifi, which connects fine.

Random thought: my sister's laptop had AOL installed, which i uninstalled. Could this have screwed with some network stuff within Windows?

Also, my sister's laptop connects fine via ethernet to my WiFi router.

------------------------------------------------------------

I'm trying to configure my sister's laptop so she can use WiFi. (802.11b)

She's running Windows XP. I've tried two different brand wifi cards (SMC and Uniden) and neither will connect. I've used an Orinoco card in the past and it worked fine. I'm wondering if the drivers and everything left behind by the hardware are causing conflicts....

Is there a way i can wipe out all of the WiFi stuff in Windows are start fresh? (besides a reformat/reinstall of course)

Make sure that windows is not trying to grab the signal. If you installed software that came with your wireless card, be careful, xp will recognize it and try to control it. You have to disable one or the other. Best to usually use the software that came with the wireless card cause they give you more control.

... have everything on and set up(router/modem/accessPoint), boot up cpu, then plug in your wifi After windows is fully booted. Xp should see something new and then just follow the yellow brick road.

..did you remove the old cards by 'Add/Remove' in control panel, both software and hardware.

...also try, Delete ALL network connections. Restart. Then Make a new one.

Just a few ideas that come to mind.

am i taking a risk by trying to:

1. uninstall all the network connections

2. uninstalling all network components under device manager?

and then trying to start over?

yes SSID, 128-bit WEP, and MAC filtering all set up.

btw, the router is a Belkin 4 port wifi (forget model #) and the PC card is an SMC2635W.

i also tried a Uniden PCW300 Wifi PC Card with same results.

Did you remember to add her laptop's MAC to the list? If you did try turning off the MAC filtering.

yep, i added the MAC address.

my next step will probably be to disable MAC filter and WEP and see if i get anywhere.

Is anything else wireless, ie is the wireless router working properly.

If you really get desperate, try running netstumbler just to see if it can see the Wireless router, just to confirm that it's sending out a signal.

i'm going to give netstumbler a try.

the router works fine. it's wired to my desktop which is networked fine.

also, my laptop is working fine, wirelessly.

the router has MAC filtering and WEP (128bit) enabled, and has been working for over a year.
