WIFI adapter

I just bought this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16833166074

I connected it and installed the driver and I was only getting 1 Mbps connection. I uninstalled the driver and installed a driver from their website and still got piss poor performance. I'm using an old WRT54GL flashed with DD-WRT V24 SP2.

When i installed the driver at first some Cisco thing wouldn't install so I had to cancel it via task manager. When I downloaded the driver the setup.exe wouldn't run, but the driver install did. I'm using Windows 7 64.

I have an Encore WIFI adapter that didn't work very well either in two computers running Windows 7. What shall I do? If I can't get this to work I will just RMA.

Can anyone recommend a good WIFI adapter that will work. I was looking at this one. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833704045

You mentioned two different wireless adapters that have poor performance. Do you get good results with ANY wireless adapters? If not, the problem may be with your old router.

My laptop gets 20 Mbps connection. No problems. I was looking at Intel WIFI adapters on Newegg and they are all PCI-e.

Just to make sure, you're not confusing mbps with MBps, right? (I'm going to assume not.)

Does your laptop get better speeds than the desktop, when the laptop is in the same room as the desktop and connected via wifi? Does moving the desktop into the same room as the router improve your wireless speeds?

I tried two wireless adapters. The Encore adapter I tried on the laptop and the desktop and both got 1 Mbps. I haven't tried the Rosewill adapter on another computer yet. My laptop gets a steady 20 Mbps connection all the time!

You tried moving the computers closer to the router, right? Most USB adapters have terrible signal strength, so if you're too far away, you won't be able to get good speeds. If you can get full speed when the USB adapter and the router are right next to each other, it's probably a signal issue.

If that doesn't work, here are two other random things that probably aren't the cause of your issue:

Are you sure the antennas are fully connected? Sometimes the antenna connects to the wifi radio chip with a radio guide cable (basically a tiny coax cable), and if the cable isn't fully seated, you'll get a very weak signal.

Are you sure you're plugging the adapter into a USB 2.0 port? Some motherboards still have one or two USB 1.0 ports on them for the mouse and keyboard. USB 1.0 is limited to 1.5 mbps, so that would explain the low throughput.

Speedtest.net I get 20 Mbps with the laptop.

I tried the other adapter with my new Windows 7 install and I got about 15 Mbps using a USB 2.0 port than it went down to 1 Mbps. These things just suck! The laptop works better!
