Wifi adapter (built in) has "hi/lo" download speeds while USB adapter is consistent

The wifi adapter in my Dell laptop (Dell 1397) has been showing erratic download speed behavior lately. When i'm downloading from hotfile and maxing out my connection, it'll download in high and low speeds. My download graph shows peaks and valleys. But when I try out my USB wifi adapter it'll just download at max speed consistently.

Could my built in adapter be "dying"?

A lot of those bif file-download sites, burst your connection in chunks. They throw a lot of bits on the wire from disk, then pause (while they do the same for someone else), and then come back to you. I've noticed that even on a FIOS connection. It's "bursty".
