Wife's system = Toast?

Hey all,

My wife's system is hurting bad.

First the basics:

1.1ghz Athlon T-Bird
Asus A7V Mobo rev 1.02
128mb Kingston PC133 x 1 stick

Basically it seems to be dead. When you press the power button nothing happens. All connections are sound. Fans don't power up, no beeps no nothing. I know that the PS is still supplying power to the motherboard due to a green light on the MB that lights up when it's plugged in. I tried removing all peripherals from the MB and still nothing.

I'm about 30 seconds from ordering replacement CPU/MB from newegg. Any ideas?

Unplug everything from the mobo. Leave only the cpu, memory, and vid card. Unplug all other drives, cards, and, peripherals. Try to power up. If it works, start adding components back 1 at a time.
 
One quick thought. I have seen reset switches stuck in before. Worth a shot. Just unplug it from the mobo.
 
Check your motherboard manual. On some, if the CPU fan is dead, then they won't boot. That is a possibility. Also, any beeps ??
 
Maggotry - Tried that, no go.

Delbert - I unplugged all switches other than power, still no response. Was considering pulling out the power switch and hard wiring it together to see if the switch was dead.

Markfw900 - I replaced the HS/Fan, same problem. Original HS/Fan operate fine in another machine as well.

Not sure if this is a new build or not, if it was working then this doesn't matter but if you built it from the ground up pull the mobo out and make sure there are no extra standoffs. It almost sounds like your board is gounding out. Hope that helps, had that happen with 2 computers I built it sucks.

Nah this isn't a new build. Just started happening all of a sudden one day. The rig's about 20 months old or so. I guess it won't hurt to pull out the MB and reinstall it to make sure nothing funky's happening under there.
 
Actually, one more idea comes to mind. Power supplies die more than motherboards in my experience. Just because one light shows up on the motherboard, doesn't mean it is good. You say this is the wife's which implies you have a system. Take your PSU out (assuming they are both ATX), and put it in hers. Maybe only one line of voltage is out, and the one that powers the ligh is on, or they are all weak or ??

Edit : One more idea, what if the ATX SW switch is bad ? I hate to suggest someone short two pins, but if you are SURE you know which ones they are, and can short them without touching anything else, then try that. This is not an idea for people not experienced in electronics, but if that silly little switch is bad, nothing works, not even a new mobo.
 
Why don't you try to switch the power supply. What brand is your power suppy. Why don't you try to switch the processor with an old one or something. It may be that your processor is dead. Did it all of sudden didn't work? I am almost sure that it is your power supply.

If you decide to get a new motherboard the MSI KT3 Ultra-ARU is a great motherboard and it comes with Diagnostic LED which tells you what's wrong with the computer when you have problems.
