All:

My wife is friends with a home-schooling family that is looking for a bargain machine that they can use for surfing and for their home-schooling software. Their limit is probably $350. I came across this used HP 6000 Pro on eBay. Buy it now price is $241:

HP Compaq 6000 Pro Microtower Core 2 Quad Desktop Computer.

The specs are as follows:

Intel Q9550 Core 2 Quad 2.83ghz CPU.
4GB DDR 3 Ram.
500GB 7200 rpm Hard Drive.
Windows 7 Professional 64bit Operating System with COA Sticker.
DVD/CDRW Multi-Burner Optical Drive.
Intel 4500 video
like 8 USB 2.0 ports, and the usual suspects like headphone and mic jack, Gigabit Ethernet.

These people would need a monitor, too. I could spec out a decent inexpensive flat panel lcd monitor. Is there anything better out there for $350???

Use an existing HDTV. Most OS cost about $99. Maybe something like a Gigabyte BRIX. A slightly older used computer might work. Our community college sometimes has sales of old computers. I have seen them give them away almost to Churches. They probably write it off on taxes.

Cant they purchase a computer and claim it on their taxes as an education expense? I think there should be something like a home schooling group that could buy computers at a discount or something like that. Just start saving $25-$50 every two weeks and you can save enough to buy a decent computer. Have a bake sale or something.

Bad idea unless you make it crystal clear that the PC has no warranty and that it's not on you, if it dies after a week.

Let Lenovo carry the warranty load... Click Here

The HP you listed would probably do just fine. I do hate HP for their proprietary nonsense though. Are there no mom and pops computer stores where you live? They usually have cheap machines with some kind of basic warranty.

Well you could go with brand new right out of the box from DELL?

$299

Everything I look at always has different pros and cons. Not many front USB ports on this. Also only has HDMI and VGA video ports. Fine if you are using with a HDTV. If you would want DVI-D you would be out of luck. You have to open a flimsy plastic door to use front USB.

Maybe the Lenovo is better.

The bottom line is the less you pay the lower the quality.

That wouldn't be a bad deal. Only thing about it; it is running win 8. Make sure they don't mind running a system with windows 8 and that their school software is compatible with 8

Windows 8 is here to stay, might as well get used to it.

Should make researching system requirements and developing a compatible and comprehensive educational software package the EoY project for one of the kids. Problem solved.
