Well, I haven't used a scanner in a while, so I can't comment there. But as far as printers go, I highly recommend Canon printers. Great looking color/photo prints, and the cost of ink is much less than what you would pay for an HP/Lexmark printer.

Best printer available right now for photo/everyday printing is the Canon i960. Amazon has it on sale for $187/free shipping/and a $30 promo certificate with purchase. Here's a pretty good review at Steve's Digicam. It doesn't print on cds though.

I don't know how serious she is about her scanning, but this Epson 3170 is a good bang for your buck deal at 199. If she wants the top of the line scanner, that would be the Epson 4870, but it costs 450 bucks and is probably too much scanner for the average Joe or Jolene.

I'll third a Canon printer. Not ink thirsty and cartriges are cheaper than most (the black\color combo packs come with 5 free sheets of photo paper too).

The Epson R300 is a great photo printer that can print on CD's as well. As far as scanners go...the 3170 that was mentioned is excellent, but the lower model, the 1670 is great for the money...heres Cnets review. 1670

I agree that the Canon printers (especially the i960) is an outstanding photo printer in terms of quality and cost. However, I must warn that the printhead is costly if it fails. I've had it go down on me two times (luckily within warranty....would cost me almost the same as a new one if it wasn't). The first time it failed, I printed 120 4x6 photos and noticed that the magenta was clogged up. The second time it failed, I only printed 40 photos due to clogging. Canon recommends that ink cleaning (through printer control panel) be done once every week. If you let it sit for a while, chances of ink clogging will increase. Other than that, it is a great printer.
