Wife orders me to buy sound card!! Its true!! Got question about the one I'm lookin at...

I am looking at getting the new Hercules Fortissimo III 7.1 cuz its loaded and seems like a good price at Newegg, won't be out till the 9th though. I need to use that SPDIF in thingy to record a song for my wife from a tape, so I can burn it to a CD for her. I am wondering if that black thing on the back of the sound card is the SPDIF port. If not, what do I need to get a song from a tape onto the computer? Also, if it IS the port, what kind of cables do I need for it? Standard 18th in. audio? Thanks for any help I can get...

Just about every sound card I've seen in the last XX years has a 'line-in' or a 'mic-in' 1/8th inch jack on the back of the card. If all you are doing is ripping a tape then just plugging the tape output through the 'line-in' jack will work perfectly.

yes the black thing is the Digital S/PDIF out (optical) port.

Let me ask a better question, what does teh SPDIF port do exactly? Just digital sound...
