Wife needs a website

My wife wants to make a simple website basically to promote herself. She has an architecture degree and wants to have an online portfolio and resume. Doesn't have to be fancy.

Anyone have suggestions for free or web-based tools we can use to create one? So far she's been trying to do something in WordPress, but it's really clunky. WP seems to be built around blogging, which isn't what she's trying to do. Some of the WP templates are a little better but they're still not perfect and they can be really hard to work with.

Neither one of us knows enough HTML to make something that looks like it's from this century, but there's so much simple website creation software out there it's a bit overwhelming. All she wants is a few tabs along the top or sides to put different pages from her portfolio. Just images + text, no need for fancy Flash animations.

lol you guys :p

Is there a forum where this belongs? I wasn't sure if "Software for Windows" or "Computer Help" might be appropriate...

I have used WordPress as the front end for many of the sites I have developed. Some of themes are very poorly coded and therefore hard to modify.

I think WordPress is your best bet, honestly. You can make a very decent website by setting up the different tabs as "Pages" in WP.

Yeah, I would agree with om3gawave and go with Wordpress. There are plenty of portfolio themes out there that can give her a nice professional looking site.

WordPress is fairly popular.

I recently set up a site for my wife using Joomla. It was pretty painless. She's an artist and her site has articles, a blog, galleries, etc.

craigslist - A friend of mine found a guy on craigslist (Miami area) who built a really cool looking website for his store for $500.

You're not going to get very useful info here, talking about your wife :).

If it's a site to promote her though, you will want something better then what a template looks like.

Find some random halfway decent template. Add the content (this is the hard part). Then find a college kid to put the site together over a break in the school schedule.

Maybe if we help him setup the site, her pics will end up on it as part of her "portfolio". Ever think of that?!

I purchased (and proceeded to rather heavily modify) the Portfolio WordPress theme.

It's got two things I really like - an area to put a "sell" statement that gets across a short message about you, and below that a list of the items in your portfolio with nice big images and text for easy browsing.

Here's a website using the Portfolio theme to show off "architecture": http://www.finallycg.com/

Thanks for all the help!

In retrospect I should have said I wanted to build a website for MY portfolio...
