I wasnt there to witness the accident personally, I am just going by the officer on scenes estimate of 35-45mph with no attempts to stop.

If the officer estimated that, I'd still be talking to someone at this point.

Your first post seems to point towards the fact that the car will only be a write off because of it's age.

I'm telling you now if a car is driven at even the 35MPH lower estimate of the police officer it really doesn't matter how new the car is it is going to be a write off. You don't just smash a bumber and bend the floor pan a bit you are looking at a bent chassis and most the body panels will be bent.

I saw am old fiesta (small car less weighing about a ton) hit a new 5 series BMW at roughly 20MPH on a motorway a couple of years back and the BMW was a blatant write off. rear axle was obviously bent all the glass was shattered every panel apart from the hood and the front bumper was unsalvagable.

Please excuse my disbelief but I have a feeling the officer in question was either exaggerating or has little experience with vehicle collisions.

Got rear-ended...hit and run. The other driver was estimated to have been going about 30 when he hit me. Over $8,500 damage to that little Corolla. Was sold as a "repairable salvage vehicle," so it's probably out there somewhere, being driven by an unsuspecting person...fortunately, other than being shaken up a bit, I wasn't hurt.

About the same for my sentra except it was 25mph by a Dodge ram 1500 V8. The trunk still closed!

Bumper was undamaged as it was a high hit. Replaced the trunk and had the rear quarter panels salvaged, two new tail lights, it was a $1,700 tab.
