Wife doesn't want to go to Canada without passports.

So we've been trying to plan what to do for our wedding anniversary and I suggested we go to Montreal. My wife doesn't want to go unless we have passports. She is afraid we won't get back into the US or something.

Granted it'll be required in 2008 but right now why is a passport any different or better than showing your drivers license?

if you have them, great, if not, don't sweat it

after all, its cananda , it isn't like you couldn't sneak back in if you had to

PASSPORT PROPOSAL

Under the plan, U.S. citizens would be required to present their passports:

* By Dec. 31, 2005, if returning from Caribbean nations, Bermuda, Central and South America.

* By Dec. 31, 2006, if returning by air or sea from Canada and Mexico.

* By Dec. 31, 2007, if returning across border crossings with Canada and Mexico.

Smack your wife. Bring a license and birth certificate and you'll be fine. This is what they ask for (check out the U.S. customs website), although I got across with just my license. The customs guy did give me a bit of a hard time though.

No were not. I travel to the US on business at least 3 times a month. All I ever show is Drivers Licence and Birth Certificate. Although, I do have a L1-B Visa

If you already have a passport, just keep it with you just in case, but show them the licenses first, and only show them the passport when they ask you to.

If not, apply for one, you might need it later.

Thanks for the input, so basically there is not big difference between a license and birth certificate vs a passport?

why dont you get a passport? you can fill out the paperwork at the local post office.

It's the $97 per person that I don't want to spend.
We are on a limited budget for a vacation and nearly $200 eats into what we would have.

I wouldn't bother with the passport until it's mandatory. And it wont be for a couple more years.

So be a man and both of you get passports.

I can't believe anybody over the age of 12 doesn't have one.

"Hey! We just got 4 free tickets to travel the world all expenses included. Wanna go?"

"nah, don't have a passport"

I use my passport to get into your crazy country, but it's not necessary yet. Gotta keep the terrorists out I guess.

its fine as long as you bring along a copy of your birth certificate along with your license. i'm not sure if someone posted this before. cuz i can't read.

If you want to go somewhere with a weird culture with lots of people that hate you, why not save some money and go to East St Louis ?

Weird culture? Montreal is superior to nearly every city in America in terms of its women, nightlife, and just awesomeness.

When my friends and I went to Canada, they made us show our passports AND they checked our rental car all over...the fact that myself and 5 of my friends are Indian and 2 of the others were Asian may explain why 🙁
