I have recently installed XP and though it is my favorite OS as of now one thing pisses me off. I use to get 99fps consistantly while playing CS...it rarely dropped below that even with smoke and the like. Anyway after installing XP I noticed CS was getting really choppy. I checked the fps and it was between 20-60...but usually around 40ish and below. I have heard this is a bug with the via agp drivers and XP and that there is a fix for it somewhere...but I have yet to locate one. I'm running the system in my sig, Det4 23.11's, and via .37's.

Any help would be much appreciated

Thanks,
Chris

Try the newest WHQL certified Detonators, or just the newest ones you can find. If it doesn't get faster, you might want to consider a dual boot for games.

Windows XP, AFAIK, doesn't need the Via drivers. Get the latest Vid card drivers from Windows Update (23.12), and make sure you turn Vertical Sync off in the Advanced options under Display settings.

Make sure in CS in the console you type "max_fps 100" or "max_fps 200"

There is no way that system should run @ 20-60 FPS in CS, my Athlon Axia 1.0 @ 1.43 GHz (110*13) on Abit KT7, and Creative GF2 MX 32MB DDR gets 99 constantly, apart from in smoke when it drops to about 60 :)

im running winxp and having no problems with gaming. My cs fps remains at 99 in all resolutions.. try executing (cl_maxfps 99) I believe thats the command to max out your fps, I believe default is 72.

Sorry, my bad, i've just spotted something wrong with my previous post.

The correct command to change your maximum framerate is fps_max 100 :)

Just in case anyone tried it and it didn't work!

Hum...i was running in Direct3d...which never affected anything before. I changed to OpenGL and turned the Vsync off like you said and it worked...thanks!

BTW...confused: I know XP already comes with VIA drivers...the .36's...but I updated to the .37's because of this problem just thinking it could help. Also...do you happen to know the date on the core of your axia? and what kind of cooling are you using...are your ears bleading? hehe...

Forcesho: The reason your getting 72fps is because that's what CS is capped at on defualt (well i thought it was 71...but it's close). Anyway try the fps_max 100 comand and you should get 99 with that card (which is the max for the game I'm pretty sure). Actually you shuoldn't notice much difference between 72 and 99 if any. I would keep it at 72 just so it doesn't jump around as much if you have a lot of sprites on your screan. I was having probs b/c mine was going all over the place like down to 20...but 60 and above is more than enough if it's solid.

Just looking back and found this thread :)

I believe my Axia is a week 23 (2001). I'm using a FOP32 heatsink, with a quiet 80mm Adda wedged on :) Also got a 92mm hole with quiet Adda over CPU, 120mm with Adda at front, and 120mm blowhole at top. It's reasonably quiet, my 24 port 10mbps hub makes almost as much noise as my whole computer!

Temps on my KT7 are about 53 full load running Seti @ home for TeAm Anandtech.
