Wierd start up problem

I have an Abit NF7-S r.2 MB, 400w SilenX power supply, 1 gig Value Select Corsair Memory and Rosewell 9600 video card, and Lian Li PC 60 case.

When the computer has been off for awhile and I push the power button there is a cranking noise - sounds like a car with a weak battery trying to start - and then it catches. If you turn it off and then back on, everything is fine. Annoying and I don't understand. Thoughts/suggestions appreciated.

are u serius, lol, you better check ur psu because a failure in the psu can take ur mobo and other components with it

sounds like a fan bearing or something of the sorts, it makes noise either until the fan reaches a certain rpm or until the bearing heats up. Turning the computer off and then on again may not make the same noise because either the fans have not stopped spinning or the bearings are still warm.

Take a look at your fans and see if they are still spinning smoothly.

Check the hard drive(s) as well as any device with a motor in it.

I"ve had a floppy drive do this once, it had a faulty return switch which detected when the heads were at the outmost position (track zero), it kept clunking the wom gear trying to get it to the home position.

Most CDROMs have the same worm gear drive setup so it could be that as well. Unplug one device at a time when the computer is cold then turn it on and you'll find out soon enough what it is.

I completely agree with Bozz. If you narrow the sound down to the hard drive, you may want to back up ll your important data as it may be on its last leg.
