wierd problem with vista

all of a sudden when i open my computer it is opening a new window every time i select something to open from the window. for instance if i select the D drive it opens it in new window and so forth for everytime i select something. how do i stop that? i tried to restore default settings under folder options but that did not work. windows did get shut down funny earlier today which i am guessing is the cause of this.
 
What does Folder Options -> General -> Browse Folders have selected? It should be "Open each folder in the same window".
 
it was set to that setting. for the hell of it i switched to the other option hit apply and then switched back. still no luck.
 
also discovered i can no longer copy files from one hard drive to my external drive. tells me the target cannot handle that type of document
