wierd ... phone dead, but here I am

This is odd to me. My phone died at noon today. I just fired up my PC and to my shock (and delight), my DSL line is working fine.

Go figure. Can anyone give some insight as to why the DSL is still working.

PS: I did unplug some phones, trying t osee if there is a dead phone in my house. No such luck.

um...dsl runs on the same cable but different wires within the cable. maybe the wires the phone runs through went bad?

Not sure if that is true. Why are filters needed if that's the case?

And the phone cut out mid-coversation and yes, we pay teh phone bills. Hope it's not a problem in the house. We want to list this place in 5-10 days ...

Wrong, they run on the same pair. They just operate in an inaudible frequency.

It is 100% possible for one to work without the other.

so how can they use the same pair when i have 2 jacks, one for the phone and one for the dsl line, 2 wires run to one jack and 2 other wires (off the same cable) run to the other jack?

Sounds like you have 2 lines coming into your home. Or you have some sort of non-standard DSL setup. But most people have a filter on all their phones for the reason Viper stated.

nope only 1 line.
guess i'm non-standard. wouldn't doubt it here in bumfvck, pa.

My guess would be you have a filter located outside your house (to filter the entire house) and the installer opted to use the 2nd line wiring for the DSL (unfiltered). If they're on the same phone number they lead to the same pair.

Whole-house filters cause that, and some earlier installations were actually put on separate pairs (even without filters), because installers didn't know what they were doing.
