Wierd mouse problem

I'm using a wireless MS intellimouse 2.0. Recently I've been having an issue where the cursor will freeze but the mouse will continue to work. For example, the cursor will be frozen but I can still move the mouse around and see different things being highlighted. It happens for a few seconds every couple minutes or so. Obviously it's really annoying. I've tried changing the batteries already. Can someone help?
 
If the motion is being transmitted into the computer, then it is not a mouse problem obviously. More like the graphics card not moving the cursor sprite anymore.

Try a graphics driver update - if that doesn't help, it may be a virus or a really silly fault on the graphics card.
