Wierd Laptop Sound Problem

So my brother a Dell Latitude C800 laptop and the sound stopped working. I went to see if I could get sound through my headphones and instead of hearing anything through my headphones the sound plays over the laptop's speakers. When I unlpug the headphones there is no sound. Quite frankly I'm stumped. Anyone know why that is happening?

Motherboard is failing is kind of a vague response. Exactly what would happen to the motherboard that would still allow sound output through speakers but ONLY if headphones are plugged in?

if it's under warranty, best let Dell fix it. as for what could cause it, oh a few hundred different things, without knowing how it's handled and treated up till the sound issue started: Static Discharge, Power Surge, Bad wiring in headphones damage the circuit to switch between speaker and headphones, moisture damage, physical damage, etc... I could give you a laundry listen of "what if's" it's a grey as to what caused it, and the best thing is to get the motherboard replaced if under warranty, and if not weigh the option of buying a board and paying to have it swapped, or buying a new laptop.
