Wierd game performance drop. Please advise.

it has happened many times.

i'm playing a game like ut2003, and i'm running around the map fast and smooth. then after a couple hours, all of a sudden, the frame rate drops to about one frame/sec for a minute or even longer. This happens even when there is no action going on. After awhile, the extreme frame rate drop goes away and I can resume playing normally.

The same thing happens for other games like simcity 4 and C&C generals.


my GF3 ti200 is overclocked to 205/460, which are regular gf3 speeds. I get no artifacts or crashes. The performance drop occurs even when the card is clocked at default speeds.

Anyone wanna throw out some possible causes of such an extreme performance drop?


i'm on a p4 2.13ghz, 512 pc800 rdram 'performance' system.

Something on your computer starting up in the background. That's all I could thing of. I once forgot to disable automatic updating. Slowed me down for awhile when it started. If you could play in windowed mode. If you got taskmanager can see if something takes a bunch of cpu cycles.

Hi,

1) It could be a background program running, such as a anti-virus/system restore/a scheduled system task.
2) The original GF3 speeds are 200/460 not 205/460, but i`ll let you off for 5mhz!
3) Has your processor got sufficiant cooling? Because ive heard that P4s clock themselves lower if they get too hot. This could also effect you.
